qThe logical design of a database is a complex process that may require the knowledge of the associations between an abundance of information. This paper describes various data modeling techniques that simplify the process of creating a logical design and then fully describes a graphical tool, named GraphER, that has been developed to visualize the information. The tool allows the user to define entities, attributes of the entities, data types of the attributes, and relationships between entities by using mouse-driven commands. The entities appear as boxes on the screen and the user can 'click' on the boxes to select the entities. Changes to an entity include defining the attributes, the data types of the attributes, and the keys within that entity. The relationships are defined by choosing multiple entities and then by labeling the type of relationship and defining any non-key attributes associated with the relationship. Upon completion of the E-R diagram, the user can then generate SQL commands for use as data definition for a database.
